Dear 116:

Just want to make sure everyone has details about the midterm. It will cover material from Assignments #1 to #6. Specifically,

* Please be prepared to quote and prove short or basic lemmas. No one should be surprised if you have to make an estimate by adding and subtracting the same thing, for example.

* Be ready to state, explain, and apply theorems or definitions up to and including section 5.9 of Luenberger.

* Be able to do simple calculations demonstrating that you understand Gram-Schmidt, Fourier series, etc.

There won't be too much time on the midterm for problems like some of the homework exercises that take a while to set up, but such problems will appear on the final. So it is very much in your interest to keep doing the homework, handing in well-written solutions, going over the answers posted, and, as always, asking lots of questions.

More guidelines about projects after the midterm. Good Luck,

-DLG
