Class,
As Dean Gross announced this week, there will be an in-class one hour MIDTERM this Wednesday, November 16 to test the topics covered since the take-home midterm. The exam may consist of true-false questions, questions requiring a definition or statement of a theorem, and short proofs.
Monday's class will be spent reviewing the topics on groups covered thusfar and should be extremely helpful in preparing for the exam. In addition, I will extend my office hours this week from 8-10 pm on Sunday in Lowell Dining Hall to allow more time to answer your questions. Finally, Tien Anh will be holding a review session from 9-10pm Tuesday evening in Science Center 507.
As per your request, last year's exam has been posted on the course website in the "Exams" folder to give you an idea of the expected difficulty of exam problems. This year, the class spent less time on basic linear algebra, so the exam will likely reflect this.
Finally, the course staff has decided that in lieu of the third take-home midterm, we will assign a short expository paper. Suggested topics will be available in early December, and we will allow each student to pick one of two due-dates, one before Winter Break and one early in reading period.
Please feel free to contact me with questions about the exam, the paper, or anything else.
