Read Stewart section 5.5: Integration by substitution.
Key areas of focus: Pay attention to the endpints of integration when substituion is used with a definite integral. Focus attentiion on the subsection on symmetry. One can often get a lot of mileage out of it. Don't think of subsitution as "introducing something extra" but rather as unveiling the underlying structure.
