| Hello and welcome to the third and last Mathematica Assignment!
In it you'll get to try your hand at solving some of the wave equations
that we are investigating this week in the PDE classes. As has been the
case with the first two labs, this one is also pretty straightforward -
in the end you'll produce another scintillating Mathematica graph, one
that shows the solution function u(x,t) for the wave equation. To
get started, you'll just need to download the Mathematica file lab3.nb
(Notebook) that you'll use to go over some more Mathematica commands.
Work your way through the assignment, and do the exercise marked in purple
at the end of the Mathematica file.
The due date for doing this last assignment is one week after the assignment is made, i.e. on Tuesday, May 7th for the Tues/Thurs sections, or Wednesday, May 8th for the MWF sections. Working through the whole Mathematica file and doing the assignment itself will probably take on the order of an hour or so. |
| For those of you who weren't able to download Mathematica last time
- here are the steps you need to take to try again. Remember, you
can always use the computers in the Science Center basement - they already
have Mathematica loaded on them.
Steps to take - first consult the Mathematica at Harvard page for instructions on how to get Mathematica on your own computer, how to get documentation etc. The computer labs in the basement of the Science Center (Unix, PC and Mac) all already have Mathematica installed. Just getting started with the computer assignment will probably be the biggest challenge. Start early and network around to find the best solution for you. Instructions, on how to use the notebooks and how to get credit can be found in the first notebook . When stuck, the FAQ page should help. Good luck! Next, to download a Mathematica notebook, click on the link below while
holding down the shift key. Save the notebook on your computer and open
this notebook in Mathematica. (On a Mac or PC start up Mathematica and
read in the file "lab2.nb" like in any other software applications, in
Unix (Linux) just type "mathematica lab2..nb" in a x-terminal). This notebook
was saved with Mathematica 4.1. It can be used with Mathematica 4.0 also
(just ignore the warnings).
