Midterm evaluations, Spring 2006 Math21a

Thanks for filling out our internal midterm evaluations. Here is a summary:

Textbook:

Summary: Most of you like it. There are even some fans. A handful think, it is too complicated. A suggestion was to identify parts we can ignore.
Quote: "Ol Johnny has served me well".
What we will do about it: we can stress better which parts of the book one can ignore.

Hourly:

Summary: Most found the exam difficult but fair. There were complaints about not giving enough partial credit, that the questions were "tricky" or "phrased differently as in the homework".
Honorable quote: "I have my people call your people."
What we will do about it: we will try to state the problems more clearly. The difficulty is ok.

Homework:

Summary: The vast majority find the homework ok. There is an inclination towards "too difficult" and "too much". We will continue as it is. Currently, we choose some of the most difficult homework problems in the book. In the past, students have complained that the exams were harder than the homework.
Honorable quote: "Perhaps more easy problems and fewer really hard problems?"
What we will do about it: keep it as it is, but do not pick only the most difficult problems.

Lectures:

Summary:The lectures were voted effective to very effective.
Honorable quote: Are classes well prepaired? "Very"
What we will do about it: make it even more effective.

Website:

Summary: Everybody seems happy about the website. Somebody mentioned office hours were chosen at unconvenient times.
Honoroable quote: "What about a list of extra suggested problems".
What we might do about it: Make a list of suggested problems. If we don't just assume all other problems are suggested...

MQC

Summary: Those who go seem to like it. Many don't know! Most would like to move it back to Loker.
Honorable quote: "Adding caviar would be nice."
What we will do aobut it: Advertise it better. We will think about the caviar.

Problem sessions

Summary Those who go, like it. Surprisingly, there are some, who do not know about it!
Honorable quotes: "Brilliant", "Awsome".
What we will do about it: Advertise it better. Maybe coordinate some of the topics.
