Week 7: March 22-26

Chapter 7.2 Eigenvalues
Key points: a) L is an eigenvalue of A if and only if det(A-L I) = 0.
b) Notion of the multiplicity of an eigenvalue.
c) At most n eigenvalues and, if n is odd, at least 1. Use continuity, det(A-L I) is a polynomial of degree n in L and is very negative for L >> 1 and very postive for L << -1.
Homework: 10, 12, 16, 22, 32, 28*, 36*

Midsemester exam on 3/23 at 7pm in Science Center Halls A and D.

Note: The homework for this week is due in your first scheduled section meeting of the week of April 5-9.
