Quantitative Reasoning 28

The Magic of Numbers

Homework A (Optional) Assigned: February 2

Due in lecture February 4

The following assignment will give you an idea of the level of difficulty of the problem sets, and the kinds of questions we will ask. It will not count toward your course grade, but nevertheless we encourage you to write it up. Since you haven't been assigned to a section yet, please just bring it to lecture on Friday.

Web Reading:
The following website will help you with the web problem. Please browse through it.
  • Fibonacci numbers

  • Problems:
Please explain your reasoning and show your work.
    1. What is the 17th Fibonacci number?
    2. If the 20th Fibonacci number is 6765 and the 21st is 10946, what is the 23rd Fibonacci number?
    3. For each of the first 10 Fibonacci numbers, determine whether it is odd or even. Do you see a pattern? Is the 15th Fibonacci number odd or even? The 100th? The 1,000th?

    Web Problems:
    1. Which of the first 100 Fibonacci numbers are prime? (that is, not divisible by any positive number other than itself and 1). You may find it helpful to browse the link to the first 500 Fibonacci numbers on the website listed above. Do you notice a pattern? Do you think the 1,000th Fibonacci number could be prime?
