Onwards into Linear modeling! In
today's class we collected data about a potentially linear relationship known as
Hooke's Law. We'll investigate the results a bit more on Wednesday using
Excel to see what types of relationships we actually ended up getting.
At this point the new assignment has been posted - please check under this link to go to the assignments page. Our afternoon problem sections will meet from 2 to 3pm on Mondays and Wednesdays and 12 to 1pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays (but not on Tuesday, July 4th). Today the section will just meet in our regular classroom. About the course: Much of the math that we will be working on during the first part of the course constitutes what is typically called “precalculus,” which includes such topics as linear and exponential growth, logarithmic scales, and polynomial functions. Knowledge of these fundamental topics is not only critical for further study in math but it also forms the basis for much of the analysis that is done in science and economics today. Confidence and experience in these areas is useful for making better sense of the modern world. Students interested in following up from this course with more mathematics should be prepared to go on to either an intensive precalculus class or classes in discrete mathematics or statistics.
