And now we're into probability and statistics! In a certain sense we are
now just studying one function - Pr(x) where Pr(x) is the probability that event
"x" happens. This function's range is easy enough to comprehend - it's
just the range from 0 to 1, but the input domain is huge - any event (e.g. that
another ceiling panel falls in the Boston tunnels, that it's going to rain on
Sunday, that I'll roll a 7 on the next roll of dice, etc). We'll start
this section by studying two tables and talk about expectations and decision
making - all things you can start reading about in the new online textbook. Just as a reminder - you can find the textbook for prob/stats at the following link: http://users.rcn.com/econnally/math/courses/S-Y/stats.pdf There is a short homework assignment due Monday to get you going with the textbook section (check the assignments page as usual). Afternoon review/problem session times: Barusch's afternoon sessions are held in room 221 in the Science Center (or if the class isn't there, you should check up in the regular classroom in 309a). Monday and Wednesday's sessions meet 2 to 3pm and Tuesday/Thursday from 12 to 1pm. When accessing files from this website, if you need to read PDF files, you can download the Adobe Acrobat Reader for free. |
