Second Math Xa Midterm!
The second Math Xa midterm will be held on Thursday,
Nov. 30th from 7:30 to 9:30pm in Science Center A. There will be
reviews held in lab on Tuesday and Thursday, Nov. 28th and 30th.
There will also be a coursewide review held in Science Center C on Tuesday
night starting at 8pm (if you want to go to the Tuesday review but can't
make that time, you should ask someone else to take notes for you and explain
what happened at the review).
Topics for the second test will emphasize material covered in
the textbook since the last midterm, i.e. chapters 6 through chapter 11
(excluding section 11.4 on rational functions):
-
Polynomials, (including quadratics from chapter 6)
-
location of max/min, inflection points - connections with first and second
derivatives
-
graphs - going from a function to its graph, giving a possible function
for a graph
-
number of roots, turning points, inflection points
-
Limits
-
computing limits from graphs and functions
-
when a limit is defined, existence of left-hand, right-hand limits
-
continuity as defined with existence of limits
-
Derivatives revisited
-
calculating derivatives of sums, products, quotients, powers
-
connection between second derivative and concavity
-
Exponential functions
-
exponential versus linear growth,
-
examples of exponential growth and decay functions
-
applications involving exponential growth/decay
-
derivative of ex
-
Extrema
-
definition of critical points
-
finding minimum/maximums for functions
-
difference between local (relative) and global (absolute) extrema
-
Optimization
-
setting up and solving optimization problems
-
testing min vs. max using first and second derivative tests
To help you get ready for the review, belos please
find some old exams from previous semesters for you to study from.
You should go ahead and try to do all the problems posted. We will
be posting solutions to these exams at some at the beginning of the week
after break (around Nov. 27th). As the syllabus changes slightly
from year to year, some of the problems on old exams cover material that
we haven't covered yet in class (for instance on logarithmic functions
and their derivatives), so we took those off of the copies posted here.
