Course Desription

The study of functions and their rates of change. Fundamental ideas of calculus are introduced early and used to provide a framework for the study of mathematical modeling involving algebraic, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Thorough understanding of differential calculus promoted by yearlong reinforcement. Applications to biology and economics emphasized according to the interests of our students.

The sequence Xa, Xb gives solid preparation for Mathematics 1b. This course, when taken for a letter grade together with Mathematics Xb, meets the Core area requirement for Quantitative Reasoning.

Sectioning information.

After the introductory meetings, calculus is taught entirely in sections. To enroll in Math Xa, 1a, 1b, 21a, and 21b, you must section by computer during the period starting Monday, September 15th, and no later than 1:00 pm on Wednesday, September 17th. Note that you can re-section as often as you like during this time and your previous entry will be erased.

Directions for sectioning by computer

If you have an email account, log onto the Harvard computer system, and instead of typing "pine," type "ssh section@ulam.fas.harvard.edu" and follow the instructions there. Your section assignment will be emailed to you by 5:00 pm Friday, Sept. 19th.
