Course Description

The study of functions and their rates of change. Fundamental ideas of calculus are introduced early and used to provide a framework for the study of mathematical modeling involving algebraic, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Thorough understanding of differential calculus promoted by yearlong reinforcement. Applications to biology and economics emphasized according to the interests of our students.

The sequence Xa, Xb gives solid preparation for Mathematics 1b. This course, when taken for a letter grade together with Mathematics Xb, meets the Core area requirement for Quantitative Reasoning.

Sectioning, Placement, and Advising Information.

After the introductory meetings, calculus is taught entirely in sections. To enroll in Math Xa, 1a, 1b, 21a, and 21b, you must section by computer during the period starting Monday, September 20, and no later than 1:00 pm on Wednesday, September 22. Note that you can re-section as often as you like during this time and your previous entry will be erased.

You can find directions for sectioning, the calculus placement exam, and calculus advising at http://abel.math.harvard.edu/sectioning/index.html
