How is a Peer Leader different from a Course
Assistant?
Course assistants are responsible for grading and for helping students out with their questions about the homework or other course content. As a peer leader you will be more of a guide and facilitator, helping to ensure that the students are able to work together effectively to solve the workshop problems. You will not be running free-form problem sessions, you won't be helping students with their homework, and you will not have any responsibility for grading students. You will be responsible for attending a weekly training meeting of approximately two hours, and for conducting a weekly 1.5-hour Workshop session with 6-8 students. You will also maintain attendance records for the Workshop and provide informal feedback through a leader log. -
As a peer leader can I provide outside help to students
(such as answering questions over email or studying for exams)?
Will I be expected to provide such help?
Whether or not you provide help to students outside of the workshop setting is entirely up to you. You are welcome to let students know they can contact you via email with questions and you can offer them extra help as they are studying for exams if you have the time and inclination. But you are under no obligation to provide that kind of outside assistance. -
Will you be holding interviews for the peer leader
position?
Because of the small size of Math X, the course staff has gotten to know all of the students pretty well so we don't feel the need to hold one-on-one interviews at this time. If you want more information from us about the position, however, you should stop by SC 435 before you leave for the summer and talk to either Bret or Dr. VC.
