Kim Nguyen: Hidden Markov models as modern day map- makers
Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 5:30 PM in SC507.
There is dinner starting at 5:30pm and the talk
starting between 5:45 and 6pm.
Competitors in the race to build the first fully autonomous car are also
competing to construct and maintain the most accurate, information-rich,
and up-to-date maps for their cars to drive on. This problem of modern
day map-making is a fun application of math in industry. In this math
table, we will take a look into the models and algorithms that allow
map engineering teams at ride-sharing companies such as Lyft and Uber
to auto-update maps using real-time driving data. Familiarity with the
basics of probability will be useful, but not necessary.
Dinner will be served.
