Serina Hu, The Frobenius determinant theorem and the beginnings of representation theory, March 26, 2019

Serina Hu Title: The Frobenius determinant theorem and the beginnings of representation theory Tue, March 26, 6pm - 7pm, Science Center 507.

Abstract: Representation theory arose essentially independently from several mathematicians at the turn of the 20th century, including Ferdinand Frobenius. In this talk, we will explore Frobenius' tackling of the factoring of the group determinant and see how character theory and representation theory emerged from his solution; we will then use some modern representation theory to prove his determinant theorem. Basic knowledge of the representation theory of finite groups is helpful, but not necessary.
