Some scenes from Series 2, Episode 5 (Catenary curves are mentioned in the context
of the construction of the Brooklyn bridge)
and Series 2, Episode 8, where "Mathematics" is mentioned. We got into this because of two
things: in December, we had to go to New York to renew our Swiss passports (unlike US passports,
were we just can do this by mail, we had to go to an embassy to get biometric data and New York
is closest). We had a room in Brooklyn and commuted by subway to the Embassy. Also visited the
Museum of Math which is not yet in its
final location.
During the winter break, we went to Newport. The mansion business would not have been my personal
thing but Newport was actually quite nice. We visited also the
Elms and the Breakers. I skipped the Marble house
and tried to do some math in a coffee shop instead. During the visit of the Breakers, we saw that there had been
a TV series "The Gilded Age". We binge watched both series shortly after. It was nice to see Brooklyn, Newport and especially
some of the houses appear there. The show is very well done. The various stories draw you in. The characters are
well designed, the acting, the costumes and the locations are excellent. They filmed a lot in the Breakers and the
Elms. To see this, two short parts in the following are actually not math related.
