Saltburn 2023

In this movie by filmmaker Emerald Lilly Fennell, Oliver Quick, a Oxford University student, gets invited for a summer to Saltburn, a strange and bizarre world of rich, eccentric aristocracy. A strange movie, beloved by critics will likely to be much discussed in any film school. This Amazon production is indeed refreshingly original, even when comparing among with other new players like Netflix or Apple in the movie business entering the more or less creatively paralysed traditional film industry. About the math, there is a strong scene at the university in a Hogwards dining hall setting, where Michael Gavey (the first friend of Oliver at Oxford) demands a math problem because he is a "genius". Oliver, forced by an outburst, gives him the math problem 423*78 = 32994. At the decadent Saltburn estate, there is also just a nice Labyrinth, the Saltburn Labyrinth. The movie itself is a labyrinth and riddle. The NYT labels it with "toxic elitism" which is quite fitting. It is not only a Gothic Northanger Abbey type comedy, it is also a fantastic crime movie with a surprise twist. One can feel an obsession with the Romantic time (Percy Shelley who died early with 29 and had married Mary Shelly, the author of Frankenstein, who both traveled with Lord Byron in Geneva.) The GIF animation to the right contains screenshots taken on the website and gives a bit of an impression on the character of the movie.
