Midterm evaluations

Thanks for your feedback on our midterm evaluations! Your input turned out to be valuable. Here are some comments on issues which came up:

Topic Feedback What we will do about it?
Homework: Assignments, where the task is to prove something are considered hard by some, others found the examples too easy. The amount of homework seems adequate overall and homework is returned in time. We will try to balance this better: increase problem difficulty for trivial problems and avoid too difficult proof problems.
Exam: The last midterm problem on parametrization was percieved hard by some. The grading of the TF questions (penalty for wrong answer) was considered harsh by others. Some had not enough time to finish the exam. We will review the amount of work for 90 minutes as well as the TF grading policy for the second midterm.
Exam preparations. The preparations for the midterm was considered adequate. Especially the preparation for the TF questions: quizz, plenary review was enough. A handful would like to get the practice exams earlier. We will try to post the practice exams earlier. However, since we want the practice exams to fit well with the midterm which goes through an elaborate proofreading procedure by the whole group, we will probably not be able to post them more than a week ahead of the exam.
MQC: the math question center is appreciated. We are often short of people specialized in Math21a. This is a problem we know about for quite some time and we work on that. If you don't get an answer in the MQC, try the office hours. (You can go to any of the section leaders office hours, it does not need to be your section leader.) The office hours are posted here.
