First Math Xa Midterm!
The first Math Xa midterm will be held on Wednesday,
Oct. 25th from 7:30 to 9:30pm in Science Center D. There will be
reviews held in lab on Tuesday, Oct. 24th. There will also be a coursewide
review held in Emerson 101 on Monday night starting at 8pm (if you want
to go to the Monday review but can't make that time, you should ask someone
else to take notes for you and explain what happened at the review).
Topics covered on this first test will include everything in the
textbook up through chapter 5:
-
Functions - basic terminology: increasing, decreasing, concave up, down,
continuous, etc.
-
Reading information from graphs and tables of function
-
know the difference between a velocity vs. time and a position vs. time
graph
-
note difference between velocity and speed
-
Graphs of basic functions - linear functions, 1/x, |x|, x2,
etc.
-
Calculating average rates of change, graphical meaning
-
Creating new functions from old functions
-
including addition, multiplication, composition, decomposition of functions
-
Altering graphs by stretching, shifting, flipping, etc.
-
understand implications for both function formulas and their graphs
-
Linear functions
-
basic formulas, finding linear functions
-
piecewise linear functions (as in section 4.4)
-
using linear functions to make approximations
-
Derivative functions
-
meaning and definition of a derivative
-
i.e. instantaneous rate of change, slope of tangent line, limit definition
-
calculating derivatives using the limit definition
-
sketching derivatives of simple functions
To help you get ready for the review, here are some
old exam problems for you to study from. You should go ahead and
try to do all the problems posted. We will be posting solutions to
these exams at some point on around Monday, Oct. 23rd. As the syllabus
changes slightly from year to year, some of the problems on old exams cover
material that we haven't covered yet in class (for instance on limits and
exponential functions), so we took those off of the copies posted here.
