Homework:
The best advice I can give to any math student is to solve problems: doing the assigned homework is the best way to learn the material. Put another way: the homework is the most important part of the course. I would encourage you to work with other students in the class. You will learn the material faster and understand it better by discussing it with your peers.
Every homework is due the class after it is assigned.

Homework Rules:
Administration:
- Homework is due at the beginning of class.
- No late homework will be accepted. In return, we will drop the lowest 3 homework scores. Please reserve these three "wild cards" for emergencies.
- Students in the Tuesday-Thursday section will turn in two homeworks on Tuesday and one on Thursday.
- We do not accept electronic homework submissions. If you do the homework with a word processor like LaTeX or Word, please print it out and submit the paper copy.
- If you cannot turn in your homework because of a religious holiday like Yom Kippur, please either turn it in early or give it to a friend to turn it in.
Your Homework:
These can be summarized by: Please make things as easy as possible for the grader.
- Please write legibly and indicate clearly where a new problem starts.
- Try to keep the problems in order.
- Use words to explain your work, if necessary. Show your work. Answers without explanations are given zero points.
- If you are unable to finish a problem, indicate where you got stuck. This will help us to give you partial credit.
- Please staple your homework.
- Collaborations are encouraged, however you should acknowledge your collaborators by name on your homework. Of course you must turn in your own homework in your own words.
- Similarly, you should acknowledge the use of Mathematica or similar software. If you use Mathematica, nevertheless, write down all steps of your computation or print out the Mathematica notebook, you authored.
Homework And The Math 21a Community:
- Please let us know about typos and misprints. We will post corrections on this page and try to make announcements in class when possible.
- Solutions will be posted here once the homework is collected.
- Homework scores from individual sections will be adjusted at the end of the semester, since each section has their own grader.
Homework Grading:
The homework graders will be instructed to use the following criteria for grading the homework. Each problem will be worth three points and should be graded according to the following scheme:
- 3 Points. Work is completely accurate and essentially perfect. Work is thoroughly developed, neat, and easy to read. Complete sentences are used where appropriate.
- 2 Points. Work is good, but incompletely developed, hard to read, unexplained, or jumbled. Answers that are not explained may received 2 points even if correct. The work contains the right idea but is flawed.
- 1 Points. Work is sketchy. There is some correct work, but most of the work is incorrect.
- 0 Points. Work is minimal or non-existent. Solution is completely incorrect. This score is appropriate if only the answer is given.
